Verified facts

HSBC reported third-quarter pre-tax profit of $9.6bn on 27 October, up 32% from a year earlier. A favourable movement in notable items included the non-recurrence of prior-year legal provisions.

The board approved a third interim dividend of $0.10 a share and said it intended a buyback of up to $1bn. The new intention is separate from the earlier $1bn programme completed in September.

Apolifina analysis

The headline growth rate includes a changing comparison base, so it should not all be described as new underlying business growth. A dollar dividend also differs from the eventual sterling amount received by a UK holder. A buyback is not a direct equal cash payment to every shareholder.

Uncertainty and risk

Capital distributions and earnings are subject to future conditions. Credit losses, interest rates and currency movements affect bank investors. General information, not a recommendation to buy bank shares.
