Verified facts

The Office for National Statistics estimated UK unemployment at 4.7% for June to August 2026 in its release on 20 October. The measure covers economically active people aged 16 and over, not the whole population.

Vacancies were estimated at 691,000 for July to September. This is a separate survey covering a later three-month period, so it should not be treated as a direct counterpart to the unemployment rate.

Apolifina analysis

For UK investors, the release offers no simple verdict on hiring. The unemployment estimate and demand for new staff can move differently. Recruiters and consumer-facing businesses remain useful places to examine how national figures translate into company trading. This release alone does not determine the Bank of England’s next interest-rate decision.

Uncertainty and risk

The ONS advises caution with short-term Labour Force Survey movements. Vacancy estimates also carry sampling uncertainty. These figures are estimates, not a precise count of every worker or open position.
