Verified facts
Standard Chartered reported quarterly pre-tax profit of $2.25bn, compared with $1.766bn a year earlier. The reported comparison is 27%; the constant-currency presentation gives a different growth rate.
The bank raised its annual operating-income growth outlook to above its previous 5%–7% range at constant currency and excluding notable items. It now expects full-year return on tangible equity around 14%.
Apolifina analysis
The reporting basis needs to sit beside a growth rate, especially for an international bank. Return on tangible equity is a business profitability measure, not the return a shareholder earns on the purchase price of a share.
Uncertainty and risk
These are quarterly results and management forecasts. Credit risk, markets and currency movements can change the outcome. The bank's international footprint should not be mistaken for a UK household-bank performance measure. No personal recommendation.
